What's this all about?
This is a workshop in historical fencing. It's two full days of high-level instruction in rapier, smallsword, backsword, sabre and cane.
If historical fencing is a new phrase for you, take a look at our main FAQ page, where we explain it.
What's so great about this event?
Basically:
- sixteen solid hours of instruction by masters-at-arms.
- All instructors are highly regarded worldwide, with about sixty years of experience as masters-of-arms between them.
- Mo. Martinez and Mo. Acosta-Martinez are both based in New York, so it's not often that they are in Europe, let alone in the UK. To study with them, you'd normally have to travel to the USA first. We're bringing them to you.
What level of experience is expected?
Although the instruction will be of the highest level, the classes themselves will be at the introductory level for students; for each given class, previous experience with the weapon will not be required (although obviously it will be beneficial).
Students will be instructed utilising drills that are appropriate to their level of expertise.
If you're new to historical fencing, that's okay. Whether you're a sports fencer, a re-enactor, an actor who wants to get a flavour of classical fencing for stage combat, a LARPer, or just someone who thinks this sword stuff sounds fun - it's all good.
Do I need to be a member of a school?
Not at all. If you're already in some fencing-related organisation, then put the name of your group into the appropriate field when you sign up, but you don't have to be in a group.
What do I need to bring?
Please see our equipment page, which covers both safety equipment and weapons.
I don't have the right weapon for a workshop. Will this do instead?
Quite possibly. You'll certainly get more out of a workshop if you participate using the right weapon, but you're welcome to try with rough approximations.
The best course is probably to email us in advance, and we'll see what you've got.
I don't have all the equipment I need. Can I borrow some?
It's possible, but not guaranteed. If you're already part of a group, we'd recommend trying to borrow something from one of your collegues who isn't attending the workshop [And why not? --Ed.] for the duration of the weekend. You could also try emailing us in advance, and we'll see what can be worked out.
If you want to borrow a weapon, definitely let us know in plenty of time; it's no good asking on the day.
I don't know whether I can make it? Can I wait?
You could, but we don't recommend it. We recommend you sign up, and let us know about your situation.
I want to come, but don't have the money yet. Can I still sign up?
Yes, please do; we'll be in touch shortly afterwards, and you can let us know when you'll be able to secure your position.
What if I need to drop out?
There are full refunds (minus a £10 admin fee) until the start of February.
I have other questions - what do I do?
Please email us and ask! We'll do our best to help you.
